For me it was the 1980 vintage, Topolos/Russian River Vineyards Zinfandel. It was old-vine, and that was something new after all the Napa/Schmappa stuff I’d tried before that. I took to Sonoma County right away. Free-thinking Italian style, not drowned in French finesse. I had never tasted a wine so big before. It had great balance and control too. 1980 was the height of the famous California drought, so imagine how little old-vine fruit there was, and how concentrated (but not jammy & fruity) it was. A bottle I would love to relive…in fact, I’m enjoying reliving it as I think about it now.

Persnickety! Yes, I suggested Chromagraphics because Andrew and his family used to own Mariner Graphics, a wonderful Healdsburg printer who has been my first choice in print jobs for a decade. Jen asked me to go to Amoruso first, which I did…but they couldn’t pull off this job. Believe me, Jen is adamant about using local businesses.

I often find myself visiting the public restroom around the corner from
the handfan museum in the alley behind dry creek kitchen. It’s pretty
clean except for some scraggly graffity and paper towels on the floor.
The oddest bathroom used to be at the bear republic brewery. It was one of those that had a urinal and a toilet but no stall so you weren’t
sure if you were supposed to lock it when you were just using the
urinal and the lock was broken for a long time (I’m talking years).
Now it’s all redone and there is more urinals but they’re mounted to
low so if you use them wearing shorts you’re going to feel some back splash. Also, what’s up with the new air dryer at the goat? It’s so loud(I’m talking jet plane)
I want to cover my ears which would not dry my hands and just make my ears wet.

Hands down the Hotel Healdsburg. While I don’t think they would call them “public”, they’re probably the nicest restrooms I’ve used this week.
